Detroit Lakes swimmers wrap up regular season

The Detroit Lakes swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season at home versus Bemidji Tuesday night at the DLCCC Aquatic Center.

The Lumberjacks were victorious 113-46.

The Lakers got good news in the return of junior John Gulon after missing three meets. His absence did allow the rest of the team to rally around each other as the season waned.

“This group of guys has grown quite a bit as a team this season,” said Laker head coach Carol Fischer. “All have dropped some major time in their swimming events and our divers have one more year of experience under their belts. I'm proud of each of the boys for working hard every week. I think each of them have experienced the payoff of that work with the amount of time dropped or gained in points awarded for diving at some point in the season.”

Gulon picked up a win in his best event, the backstroke, winning in 1:01.45. He was also the butterfly runner-up (1:08.29).

Ryan Erickson was the 200-freestyle runner-up in 2:17.41. Micah Barberg (2:25.34) was third.

Zariah Wouters placed second in the IM (3:04.11) and the 500-free (7:14.64).

Four DL swimmers have qualified for the Section 5A championships in Morris on Saturday, March 13: Barberg, Erickson, Gulon and Zane Roberts. Each swimmer will compete in two individual events and two relays.
