The No. 11AA Detroit Lakes wrestling team swept a home triangular Thursday night defeating Ottertail Central and Frazee in convincing fashion in front of a COVID capacity crowd at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium.

The Lakers improved to 10-2 on the season in a pair of lopsided victories.

Behind six pins, DL opened with a 58-13 victory over Ottertail Central.

Laker lightweights are the most inexperienced group on this year’s team, but it was that group that got the Lakers off to a strong start.

The trio of Andy Bartness (106 pounds), Izaiah Vargas (113) and Leroy LaCrosse (120) all recorded first period pins with Bartness needing only 18 seconds to take down Levi Evavold for the fastest pin of the night. Vargas pinned Collin Tierney in 50 seconds and LaCrosse made it a first period sweep and an 18-0 lead pinning Ryan Despart in 1:11.

A forfeit at 126 had the Lakers up 24-0 and well on their way to victory.

Cade Jackson (145), Blaine Henderson (182) and Jeffrey Moen (220) also won by fall.

Henderson went from defense to offense in a snap scoring on an escape and then going straight for a leg rolling Tristan Evavold to his back for a fall at 4:49.

Brody Ullyott controlled his match with Logan Schleske winning by major decision 11-2.

At 160, Garett Nelson scored near fall points in the final 30 seconds of his match to defeat Jaxon Rich 7-5.

Thad Schlauderaff won a close decision over Will Ehlert 5-3 at 170.

Frazee defeated Ottertail Central in the second dual 53-27. The Hornets’ 132-pounder Jake Nagel recorded his 50th career victory.

The Hornets and Lakers wrestled with the lights down and a single mat in the middle of the gym.

Detroit Lakes head coach Rob Ullyott talked about one of his mantras in the pregame for both matches limiting bonus points to the opponents and scoring in the bonus. Both teams were adept at that with six of the first eight matches ending in decisions.

The rivals swapped leads with three ties at 9-9, 12-all and 15-15 before Detroit Lakes took control by winning five of the final six matches.

Brody Ullyott gave the Lakers the lead for good with a second period pin of Brock Barlund at 160 pounds.

Nelson pinned Max Rue at 3:02, followed by Henderson’s major decision 10-2 over Daniel Graham.

Byron Kropueske of Frazee picked up the Hornets’ final points after trailing 2-0 heading into the second period against Cale Abraham. Kropueske was a 6-4 winner.

DL heavies Moen and Andreas Barnett polished off the win with pins. Barnett needed only 31 seconds.

After being on the losing end against Frazee for years, the Lakers are undefeated against the Hornets since 2016.
