Detroit Lakes wrestlers take down Perham in section dual
Lakers earn the triangular sweep with a blowout victory over Moorhead.
Detroit Lakes picked up a sixth consecutive dual victory and third straight triangular sweep, blowing out Moorhead and picking up a Section 8AA victory over the host Yellowjackets at The Hive gymnasium in Perham Tuesday, Feb. 9.
The three top teams in 8AA are all contenders for this year’s title. Last year’s runners-up, Thief River Falls, defeated Detroit Lakes by five points earlier this season. Perham and the Prowlers will not meet in the regular season. With Detroit Lakes winning on the Jacket mat Tuesday, the teams will likely remain in order in the next state rankings.
Currently, Thief is at No. 9; Detroit Lakes No. 11 and Perham unranked, but in the top 20.
Perham took the Lakers to the final match. One advantage Detroit Lakes has is the best heavyweight in the section, No. 5 Andreas Barnett.
Barnett was essential to DL’s run to a medal finish at state last year. He poses a tough out to either team.
Perham’s Reece Wilprecht matched up with Barnett in the final match of the dual with the Lakers leading 37-33 in Tuesday’s nightcap.
Twenty-four seconds later, the match was over by way of a Barnett pin.
DL middleweights were key in winning five straight matches from 126 pounds to 152.
Perham led 18-0 after three straight falls to start the dual. Matching pins by DL’s Tyson Ullyott, Carsen Wold and Cade Jackson, to go with a major decision from Bradly Swiers put DL in front for the first time 22-18.
A Perham forfeit to Brody Ullyott at 152 proved to be six big points as the teams split the final six matches.
Blaine Henderson posted a second period pin at 195 and Jeffrey Moen won a 6-2 decision at 220 to set up Barnett with the lead.
In the opener, Detroit Lakes dropped only three matches in a 60-13 victory over Moorhead.
The Lakers got pins from Tyson Ullyott, Swiers, Cade Jackson, Brody Ullyott, Garett Nelson, Cale Abraham, Henderson, Moen and Barnett.
Last week, Cade Jackson posted his 50th career pin and 100th career victory, according to The Guillotine.
The Lakers are back at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Thursday, Feb. 11 against Barnesville and Park Rapids, beginning at 5 p.m.
