The Laker girls swimming and diving team scored a season-high team point total in a 137-43 victory over the Fosston-Bagley Seals Tuesday to remain undefeated after four meets.

The strong effort allowed head coach Carol McCarthy to get a good look at her younger swimmers while the veterans continued their usual efforts in capturing nearly first place in every event.

“Lots of good time drops for some of our younger kids,” she said.

Detroit Lakes placed first in 10 of 12 events, including sweeps in all three relays and individual victories from five different competitors.

Evan Westrum and Kaitlyn Peterson led the way with two event wins. Westrum won the individual medley and the butterfly. Peterson showed her versatility in sprints and distance sweeping the 50 and 500-freestyle races.

Peterson and Faith Hamm swam together for much of the 500 with Peterson getting to the wall first with a final kick to clock 5:46.19 to Hamm’s 5:47.22. Ellie Staley was third in just over six-minutes.

Hamm also led a three-pack of Lakers first to touch in the 200-freestyle with runner-up Marin Westrum and Cora Martin.

Madi Gerdes won the breaststroke with teammates Ellie Staley and Cora Martin next in second and third places.

Hope Hamm scored 168.95 in one-meter diving to edge teammate Kyle Tulius (165.85). DL’s Kaitlyn Anderson finished third (144.55).

The Seals’ Ashten Wolfe and Emma Vig picked up wins for the visitors in the 100-free and 100-backstroke, respectively.

DL had the top two medley and freestyle relays. Evan Westrum, Faith Hamm, Ellie Staley and Kaitlyn Peterson finished off the meet with a 400-freestyle victory.

The Lakers (4-0) travel next to Crookston Thursday, Sept. 24.

Section coaches had a Zoom meeting Wednesday to discuss the postseason. The DLCCC will be one of three host sites for the Section 8A Championship meet Saturday, Oct. 24. All diving will be held at Bemidji on Oct 22.
