Detroit Lakes commanded all three sets and won handily in a sweep of visiting Frazee 3-0 Tuesday night at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium in a non-conference volleyball match. The Lakers won by scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-20 in the match-clinching third set. "We set the goal of getting out of the gym in three and they did it," DL head coach Lynnsey Wimmer said. "It was good to see their hard work come together. All members contributed to the win tonight which makes it harder for teams to defend, as we don't just have one player they need to focus on." Up one set to none with a tie score at nine in the second set, the Lakers jumped out to a 17-13 lead and rattled off five consecutive points for a 22-14 advantage before sealing the second set with three of the next four points. Senior Kyra Vagle, in likely her last home volleyball match, led DL with 10 kills. She added 11 assists. The Hornets started out hot in the third set taking a 5-1 early lead. Haidyn Gunderson had two of her nine kills in a three-point span to close to 5-4 and the Lakers took a 6-5 lead behind the consistent serving of Macy Kirchner. The teams played to five consecutive tie scores from six-all to 11-11. The Lakers would not relinquish the lead after a sixth tie at 14-14 on a block by Mikayla Markuson, one of her three in the game, to take a 15-14 advantage. Teeya Doppler also had three blocks and she and Markuson each totaled six kills in the match.
Kirchner was at the service line for another streak of DL points leading the Lakers to a 20-15 lead. Frazee rallied for a pair of points to cut the DL lead to three, but Vagle served two straight scores with a Gunderson kill giving DL a 22-17 cushion. Freshman Bre Price scored her only kill of the game at an opportune time to put DL at match point 24-20 and the Lakers ended the match on the next serve. "They played like a team and won like a team," said Wimmer. "We are peaking and we are happy about that. It is the time to peak with sections right around the corner." DL improves to 9-18 on the season and will travel to Staples-Motley Thursday, Oct. 22 for the final game of the regular season in a Mid-State Conference matchup with the 2-23 Cardinals. "Thursday, we go to Staples with the same goal, out in three," Wimmer said. "Ending our season on two wins, the girls will go into sections the overlooked underdog with a lot of tricks in their back pocket. If you watched them early in the season, or even just a few weeks ago, you see a new team. One who found what is working after the loss of Naomi to a knee injury. As the girls say, it is time to go. They are doing just that." Naomi Larson was lost for the season in early October with a medial collateral ligament (MCL) knee injury. Including recent tournament play, the Lakers have won six of their last 10 matches.
