DL's U-14 softball team takes 2nd in state

The Detroit Lakes U-14 softball team tried to defend the 2012 class D title over the weekend in Buffalo, with 16 other teams also trying to unseat them as champions.

The Detroit Lakes U-14 softball team tried to defend the 2012 class D title over the weekend in Buffalo, with 16 other teams also trying to unseat them as champions.

It was a close back-to-back championship run for the Laker squad, but they fell just a bit short after finishing as state runners-up.
In the opening game Detroit Lakes handled Delano Black by a score of 12-2.

Emma Maguire picked up the win, as Kyra Vagle collected two hits and two RBIs. Emily Schiltz, Sydney Prussia and Dani Unruh also reached safely with hits.

In game two, Detroit Lakes dominated St. Paul Schaumburg 14-0 in three innings.

Maguire and Vagle combined for a perfect game allowing no base runners. Schiltz had two hits and two RBIs in the victory.
Cheyenne Dallmann also had a pair of RBIs and a triple.

Day two of the tournament started out well as Detroit Lakes won 11-3 over Dassel-Cokato.

Maguire picked up her third win of the tournament, while Macy Kirchner collected two triples and double in the victory.
Vagle went 3-4 and Dallman and Emily Schiltz had two hits apiece.

By winning their third game in a row, it put Detroit Lakes in the championship bracket against league nemesis and local team Dilworth-Glyndon Felton.

Detroit Lakes only losses this year came from the hands of DGF.

DL jumped on the DGF pitcher in the first inning with Vagle leading off.

Kirchner sacrificed her over to second base, while hot hitting Schiltz laced a single to left to give DL a 1-0 lead.
The lead would not last long as DGF scored four runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 4-1 lead.

DL cut the lead in the third inning on an RBI triple by Schiltz, scoring Kirchner from first base.

DGF padded their lead by scoring two unearned runs in the fourth inning making it 6-2.

DL cut the lead in the fifth with an RBI single by Schiltz scoring Vagle.

DL made a comeback in the last frame scoring two runs making it 6-5.

With two outs and DL runners on first and third base, the DGF pitcher got the last out to conserve the run.
With the loss DL, had to play Moose Lake in the losers’ bracket for any type of championship repeat.

DL scored single runs in the second inning, fifth, and two runs in the home half of the sixth and held off Moose Lake 4-2.

Maguire pitched for the win, while Vagle had two hits and a home run.
Maguire and Unruh also collected two hits in the effort.

With the win, Detroit Lakes had to beat DGF two consecutive times to defend their title.

The game was a pitchers’ dual and scoreless until the fourth inning.

DGF exploded for eight runs and eventually won the game 8-0.

Vagle and Schiltz had two hits apiece for DL.

With the loss, DL ended its season 17-5 and as state runners-up.

For the tournament: Maguire was 4-2 with 14 strikeouts and a 2.46 ERA and 6-15 at the plate; Vagle was 12-21 with three doubles and a home run; Schiltz was 11-13 with six RBIs; Kirchner 4-13 triple, two doubles, three runners caught stealing; Prussia 4-13, zero errors; Dallmann 4-13; Unruh 4-9; Betty Schouviller 1-9; McKenna Krengel 0-2; Maddie Ramsey 1-7; Amber Lymann 0-1 and Mikayla Feddersen 0-1.

The Detroit Lakes U-12 softball team also did well in state and won a pair of games.

The team started out strong by beating Becker 10-9, as Madi Kirchner was the winning pitcher.

Rachel Perkins and Sydney Schaumann collected hits in the win.

In game two, DL fell 10-6 against Howard Lake.

Game three DL won 14-13 over Prior Lake.

DL collected 11 hits with a home run from Perkins and three hits by Matteay Borah and Laurynn Manning.  From there, the Lakers would lose 12-0 to Prior Lake in their final game.
