Experienced Bomber girls look for third win Tuesday night

After dropping their opening game to Red Lake Falls, the Waubun girls' basketball team (2-1) has reeled off two consecutive wins heading into Tuesday's game versus Park Christian (1-2).

After dropping their opening game to Red Lake Falls, the Waubun girls' basketball team (2-1) has reeled off two consecutive wins heading into Tuesday’s game versus Park Christian (1-2).

The Bombers’ two victories were blowouts, a 67-31 victory over Mahnomen and a 58-16 win over Rothsay, both on the road.

In fact, the first five games of the season are all away from Waubun with a visit to Lake Park-Audubon at end of the week before playing their home opener against Climax/Fisher Tuesday, Dec. 16.

“Our season has been going pretty well, so far,” Waubun Head Coach Lindsey Schultz said. “We have been playing as a team and really figuring things out. This is a different story from last year. Defensively, we have stepped it up a level. We aren't going to score a ton of points, but we can be solid defenders if we choose to be.”

Senior Caitlin McArthur and junior Megan Swedberg lead the Bombers. McArthur is averaging 15.3 points per game, while Swedberg is in double figures scoring 11.3 ppg.

“Caitlin and Megan really have been playing well. Both played a lot of minutes last year and put in a lot of time this summer which is showing early this season.”

McArthur has been hot early from long range sinking four of seven three point attempts (57.1 percent). Swedberg is the team leader with 25 rebounds in three games averaging 8.3 per game and leads the Bombers with nine blocks.

Senior Natalie Lerud is putting in 9.3 per game, while sophomore Vanessa Spry is close behind with 8.3 points per contest.

The foursome all scored in double figures in the win over Mahnomen.

McArthur shot 50 percent from the field (8-16) and from three (2-4) en route to 23 points in the victory over Rothsay.

“It is nice to have some veteran players back this year that have a year or two of varsity experience under their belts now.”

Waubun is 1-0 in Pine to Prairie South Conference play and are outscoring their opponents 162-94 through three games.

Park Christian’s lone victory was a 38-25 win in Rothsay Dec. 4. The Falcons and Bombers square off tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Moorhead at 7:30 p.m.
