Long-range and free shots were more than enough to down the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team Tuesday in Moorhead by the score of 63-57.
The Spuds opened the game by sinking their first trio of the three-pointers for a 9-0 lead, which only injected a load of confidence in the 2-13 team.
From there, the Lakers did carve into the deficit, trimming it to 9-8, but Moorhead was paced by the play of guard Kelli Tonn, who sank five treys and was 11-13 from the free throw line for a total of 30 points.
Moorhead also held a sizable edge on the charity stripe, going 24-30, while the Lakers were 7-14.
"We defended the three-point shot by going man-to-man most of the game, but they still hit them," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "After that 9-0 start, Moorhead played aggressive and physical. They would get to the loose balls and kick it out to their perimeter shooters."

Moorhead also went 9-10 at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the game for its second win of the season.
Laker senior guard Kayli Muckenhirn had a stellar game on the offensive side of the court by scoring 28 points, including four three's of her own.
"Kayli is really having a breakout kind of season," Hoganson said. "She hit a variety of shots and had a lot of nice pull-up jump shots."
Senior post Jen Matter also hit for double digits with 13 points.
The Lakers (6-8) played host to Pequot Lakes Friday and will continue their competitive Mid-State schedule at home against Wadena-Deer Creek (13-2) Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
"We need to start taking better care of the ball," Hoganson said.
