The No. 4-4A Lakers face a similar game as last week in facing a struggling team. DL brings an undefeated record to Park Rapids to face the Panthers at Vern Weekley Field Friday night. Since renewing the rivalry in 2011, the Lakers are 3-0 versus Park Rapids outscoring the Panthers 90-36. Last year’s game was close and both teams were ranked. Two straight drives resulting in touchdowns to start the third quarter provided enough cushion for the Detroit Lakes’ defense, as the Lakers (No. 6-4A) escaped with a 14-7 win on the road against the No. 9-3A ranked Panthers. Park Rapids led 7-0 at the half.
The Panthers (1-4 overall, 1-3 HOL-N) have gotten off to slow starts this season and have been forced into playing catch-up. Last week, Thief River Falls busted out to a 42-0 lead before Park Rapids put up 20 points late in the game. The week prior, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton put up 34 points in the first half en route to a 40-26 victory. Both of those games were away from Park Rapids. “We have to figure out why we don’t come out and play with intensity from the start,” Park Rapids head coach Aaron Morris said. “We can’t start playing in the third and fourth quarters when we’re so far behind. If the kids decide to play, we can play with anybody. We just have to be ready to play from the first play.” The Panthers lost a nail-biter at Frazee to open the season 26-23 and are 1-1 at home losing 41-25 to No. 2-2A Pequot Lakes and defeating 1-4 Roseau 43-0. Park Rapids’ defense was on that night allowing only 10 total yards to the Rams. DL takes their five-game winning streak on the road for the next two weeks looking to keep pace with Pequot Lakes to vie for a conference title showdown in week eight when the two teams meet at Mollberg Field. While the Lakers cannot look past Park Rapids or Perham (3-2, 2-2), the Patriots have a similar path in facing D-G-F (3-2, 3-1) at home and at Thief River Falls (2-3, 2-2). [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"1175910","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"270","style":"line-height: 1.538em;","typeof":"foaf:Image","width":"480"}}]] The D-G-F Rebels will test the Patriots’ conference-leading defense. Pequot is allowing only five points per game and have posted shutouts in four of five games. Park Rapids put up 25 in the only game the Patriots’ opposition found the end zone. The Patriots’ numbers are bloated given their five opponents have a combined record of 5-20, three of those wins are Perham’s. DL’s previous opponents are 7-18. The Rebels have a chance to make the Heart O’ Lakes-North Conference chase a three-team race and DL’s to lose if D-G-F can defeat the Patriots Friday night. That game will be the biggest test so far this season for Pequot, no question. Park Rapids has a huge hill to climb to get back into their season facing the Laker defense. DL is allowing only 6.8 points per game and have proven dominant in all five games. Meanwhile, the Laker offense is clicking on all cylinders running and in the passing game and will prove a very stiff test for the Panthers. Park Rapids has allowed an average of 29.8 per game, second highest in the HOL-N to Thief River Falls’ 34.8 ppg. The Lakers have gotten huge performances from different players each week, the latest a four-touchdown and 100+ yard rushing performance from Sam Champa. The week prior, Forrest Schleske surpassed the century mark and found the end zone three times. [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"1175886","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"480","style":"line-height: 1.538em;","typeof":"foaf:Image","width":"258"}}]] The well-oiled Laker machine scored from all over the field against East Grand Forks with Schleske’s score from 15 yards out being the shortest distance gained for six points. Champa’s scores were from 24, 29, 33 and 34 yards out. To top it off, Christian Hedstrom and Ryan Cihak hooked up for a 75-yard passing score. DL has proven they can run the ball in short yardage, score from anywhere and get the clock moving. The fourth quarter flew by last week as a 35-point advantage induced running time on the clock. DL also has the defense to win close games, as they proved at D-G-F in week three in their only close game - a 14-13 win in Glyndon. Glyndon is a tough place to play and that test was far more helpful to the Lakers than four blowouts. If trends continue for Park Rapids and Detroit Lakes, week six may provide another one.
