Fight fans pack DL gym for boxing
Lakes Area Boxing hosted 19 amateur Golden Gloves boxing matches last weekend with each fight bringing a different kind of energy to Ralph Anderson gymnasium.
The fights ranged from eight-year-old, 60-pound bouts to the Region 4 Golden Gloves Boxing semifinals.
LAB had seven fighters competing.
"I am proud of our team the way they represented Detroit Lakes and the Lakes Area Boxing team,” LAB coach Chris Holt said. “They all worked hard in the gym to get ready to showcase in DL. They all wanted to do their best in their hometown to show everyone the skills they have learned since walking in the doors. We don't have many boxing matches in DL but with the support of the community I believe that the community will want more Golden Gloves action to happen in the Detroit Lakes area.”
LAB’s Quintin Hedlund lost a close match to Leech Lake's Xavier Jackson.
Kane Olmsted was defeated by Colton Carr. Olmstead was down on the scorecards and came back strong in the third and final round, which earned him the fightiest fighter award of the night.
Dalton Bymers won a unanimous decision against Iron Range Boxing's Nick Pierce.
Kyla Schatz won her golden gloves debut match with a third round flurry of punches against a tough girl from the Nordic Warrior Boxing Academy Ellie Roers.
“That could have been the fight of the night,” Holt said.
Aiden Bymers lost a very close decision to Twin Ports Boxing Santino Amsborn.
Tiyric Boswell lost to Nordic Warriors Boxing Academy’s Paul Haas in a light heavyweight match.
Josia Weiters of St. Cloud Elvin Vazquez to advance to the Region 4 finals in the main event.
Marchello Rolland of Northside boxing club in Minneapolis was awarded as the best boxer, along with DL’s Olmsted with the fightiest fighter award. Donny Martin of Iron Range Boxing received the sportsmanship award.
The Golden Gloves Boxing show was a fundraiser for the Lakes Area Boxing club to raise money to update the facility and to take kids to local and national tournaments. Area fans can donate to the Lakes Area Boxing club by going to their Facebook page and using the Go Fund Me link.
