The Frazee football team picked up a first victory of the season defeating Wadena-Deer Creek in Wadena 47-20 Friday night.

“It felt good to get that first win,” Frazee head coach Jim Jacobson said. “We have been working hard all season with a tough schedule and getting one tonight was another step in the right direction.”

The Hornets were coming off a six overtime heartbreaker in week five losing to Osakis 42-36 and both the Hornets and Wolverines struggled to exert any will in a scoreless first quarter at Wadena.

Frazee opened the game up in the second quarter scoring three touchdowns to lead 21-6 at halftime.

Logan Wacker connected with Rory Drewes on an 18-yard scoring pass at 10:30. The defense added a touchdown on a Keith Huber recovery at midfield three minutes later. Wacker capped a seven-play, 60-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run at 3:42. The Hornets overcame two holding penalties on the drive, the second coming inside the 10-yard line on second and goal.

“I think we played with integrity and heart tonight which are two of the most important keys to winning a football game,” said Jacobson. “We had to overcome a slow start but got significantly better as the game went on.”

Frazee’s 47 total points were a season-high for offensive output. The Hornets had scored 68 points in five games coming into Friday night’s contest.

“Our line play really stood out in the second half when we were finishing blocks and rolling guys 10 to 15 yards downfield,” said Jacobson.

Frazee scored twice in the third quarter and twice again in the fourth.

Tanner Bachmann scored on a 25-yard run and Wacker added a two-yard scoring run for a 33-6 lead.

Jeff Marshall rushed in from the six at 6:10 of the fourth quarter and Jon Hoffmann added a three-yard run with 2:26 remaining in the game for the final Hornet tally.

“We took another step forward today with our play and guys are really starting to believe that we can play with anyone in our section,” said Jacobson. “Our goal is to get better this week and prepare for a playoff run, as far as we are concerned we are 1-0.”

Frazee improves to 1-5, while the Wolverines continue to quest for their first win at 0-6.       Wadena-Deer Creek has lost 12 consecutive games.
