Retribution will be on the minds of the No. 4-4A Detroit Lakes football team as they travel to Perham Friday in the fourth installment of the battle for the paddle at Ted Meinhover Field. Perham currently holds the Pigskin Paddle traveling trophy after a 14-0 victory in Detroit Lakes last season in a game that spanned two days as Friday night’s action was washed out due to rain and lightning forced play to be completed on a muddy Mollberg field Saturday afternoon. The road team has won the last three matchups between the two clubs. Perham is 3-3 overall this season and 2-3 in the Heart O’ Lakes North Conference. The Yellowjackets are coming off a 22-14 loss at Thief River Falls last Friday. The Lakers can clinch a share of the HOL-North championship with a win and with a follow-up victory next Wednesday over Pequot Lakes at home can cinch up sole possession of the conference title. DL shared the title last year with Park Rapids with 5-1 marks and won the conference outright in 2012 undefeated. Perham is the last team other than DL to win the HOL-North outright, doing so in 2011 with a 5-1 record.
Perham will have their hands full with the rising confidence and momentum of undefeated Detroit Lakes. The Lakers have only been threatened in one game this year. DL is outscoring their opponents 172-34 scoring 28.7 points per game to compliment the conference’s best defense averaging 5.7 ppg allowed with two shutouts. Perham is playing even football outscoring their opponents 122-110 scoring 20.3 ppg and allowing 18.3. The Laker defense will focus on Cole Schmitz, Perham’s leading rusher with 483 yards on 65 carries this season. Schmitz doubles up as Perham’s leading tackler on defense. Muer leads Perham in scoring with six touchdowns and has seven catches for 125 yards and two TDs. Malikowski is 45-94 passing for 543 yards and six touchdowns. He has been picked off 10 times. The Perham defense will have to adapt to the multi-dimensional Laker offense and its core of ball handlers..
