No. 5A Mahnomen-Waubun overcame a tough first half and a tied score at halftime to roll Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 42-14 to improve to 3-0 on the season.
“We played a very sloppy first half,” Thunderbirds head coach John Clark, Jr. said. “Poor blocking, poor tackling, and fumbles kept us out of sync. I thought Walker played with more effort than us the entire first half. I give a lot of credit to Walker, they had us on our heels. The second half was much better in terms of effort. Overall, I thought we took a step back in this game.”
The Wolves grabbed two first half leads on the opening score by Riley Well from two yards out and a Well four-yard run with five minutes to play in the second half to go up 14-6.
Parker Syverson scored the Thunderbirds first touchdown on a 26-yard run to cut the lead to 7-6 three minutes into the second quarter.
The Wolves would not see the end zone the remainder of the game.
Quarterback Jon Starkey tied the game with less than three minutes to play in the half on a six-yard scoring run to cap a seven-play, 60-yard drive.
The touchdown was the first of three consecutive scores for Starkey as the Thunderbirds put up 36 unanswered points to turn the game into a rout. The team’s play, however, had the Thunderbirds less than ecstatic on the bus ride home, according to Clark, Jr.
“They learned a lesson,” he said.
Starkey scored from the 10 and on a six yard run in the third quarter as the Thunderbirds headed to the final 12 minutes up 28-14.
