The Lakers play home and away games every other week with one day game on the schedule, a 1 p.m. kickoff at East Grand Forks in week two Thursday, Oct. 15.

Area rivals highlight the middle of the schedule with Fergus Falls coming to Mollberg Field Friday, Oct. 23 and DL traveling to Meinhover Field in Perham the following Friday, both 7 p.m. starts.

The final home game of the regular season is against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Friday, Nov. 6 and the last road contest Wednesday, Nov 11 at Pequot Lakes, both 6 p.m. starts.

The Lakers will not see a Section 8-4A opponent during the season.

State champions ROCORI and Willmar meet at Hodapp Field in Willmar in week three in the only matchup between any of the five teams (Grand Rapids, Little Falls).

Last year, Max Gunderson had a career game on both sides of the ball and Gabe Hanninen entered DL football history scoring five times in the first half of a 48-27 manhandling of Willmar at Mollberg Field to advance to the section final.

ROCORI blanked Grand Rapids 30-0 in the 2019 section semis before holding off Detroit Lakes 14-6 in the snow at Alexandria to advance to state. The Spartans went on to win the state championship defeating SMB (St. Paul Academy, Minnehaha Academy and The Blake School) 22-21 in overtime. ROCORI quarterback Jack Steil threw a 15-yard touchdown pass on fourth-down to Jayden Philippi at the pylon and then completed a two-point conversion pass to Andrew Anderson for the upset victory.

It was the first overtime Prep Bowl game since 2005 and the seventh since the format began in 1982. ROCORI captured its second state championship (2011).

Pelican Rapids quarterback McHale Korf led the Vikings to the end zone twice in the final 12 minutes to complete a 22-14 comeback victory over Frazee in the Section 8AA semifinals in Pelican Rapids Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019. Robert Williams / Tribune

Highlighted games from around the area include Frazee at Pelican Rapids to finish the regular season for both teams in a rematch of last year’s thrilling Section 8AA semifinal.

Mahnomen-Waubun split three home games with two at the Bomb Shelter in Waubun against Warroad in the season opener and week three against Red Lake County Centra. The Thunderbirds wrap the schedule in Mahnomen against Polk County West, the team that dethroned Thunderbirds.

First-year Lake Park-Audubon head coach Eli Beachy will have a stiff test in the opener at home versus the defending Section 6A champions Underwood. The Rockets were 10-2 last year advancing to the state quarterfinals where they were defeated 20-8 by Ada-Borup West. The Raiders finish the season in Ada beginning and ending the schedule with state tournament teams from 2019. The Cougars reached the state semis before losing eventual state champions Blooming Prairie at U.S. Bank Stadium.
