Grand Rapids recorded the largest margin of victory in Minnesota high school football in 90 years Thursday night, posting an 89-0 win over visiting Hibbing in a Northeast Red subdistrict game.
According to Minnesota State High School League records — admittedly unofficial due to sporadic record keeping over the years — the last time a game saw a similar margin of victory was in 1930 when Mahnomen defeated Moorhead Reserve 89-0.
The last time a Minnesota team scored more points — again according to the MSHSL — was the 90 points Blue Earth scored in 1966.
Grand Rapids (6-0) led 68-0 at halftime, aided by three interception returns for touchdowns in a 40-point second quarter.
Hibbing announced earlier in the day that it is ending fall activities due to a spike in COVID-19 cases. Therefore, Duluth Denfeld will play at Hermantown in a Section 7AAAA semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Duluth activities will cease the following day for at least four weeks.
Grand Rapids (6-0), the top-ranked Class AAAA team according to the Quality Ratings Formula on minnesota-scores.net, will have a first-round bye in Section 8AAAA and host Detroit Lakes in the semifinals Saturday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m.
