Minneota is one of the toughest Class A football teams in the state to score on. It didn’t take long for Mahnomen-Waubun to find out why in its state quarterfinal game on Friday night in Monticello.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Vikings (12-0) punched in two rushing touchdowns in the second to take a 14-0 lead. Minneota surrendered just 12 points in the regular season and 13 in the section tournament. A two-touchdown deficit at halftime was a mountain for the Thunderbirds (9-2) to climb.

Connor Sik ran in his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter before Peyton Gilland went through the air to find Anthony Rybinski near the goal line. Maxwell Rost put the finishing touches on the 34-0 win with a 34-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

The Thunderbirds had a slower day on offense than they’re used to having. Mahnomen-Waubun gained 137 yards on the ground. Will Starkey had 58 of those yards on 19 carries. Dennis Ashley had six carries for 42 yards. Ashley alo caught the only two Thunderbird competitions of the game for a total of eight yards.

Rolando Ellis led the defense with nine solo tackles. Starkey had the next highest total with four. Ashley picked off Gilland for the Thunderbirds’ only forced turnover on the night.
