Kyley Foster and Shay Nielsen proved too much for the Bemidji High School girls basketball team as Detroit Lakes beat the Lumberjacks 74-40 on Tuesday night at the BHS Gymnasium. Foster scored 27 points - 26 in the first half - and Nielson scored 18 as the Lakers used quick play and a size advantage to dominate the Lumberjacks. The Lakers have a lot of experience on the team and they made it a tough night for Rumer Flatness at the point and the post players in the paint. The DL forwards scored 36 of the team’s 74 points with many coming off second-chance shots.
Kelsey Olson led the Lumberjacks with 22 points; 18 of her points came in the first half. Olson helped BHS get out to a strong offensive start by knocking down four three-pointers in the first half. The Lumberjacks did improve offensively from their last game and that was a focus of the team going into this game. Against Buffalo the Lumberjacks went into the half down 30-6, so 27 points in the first half was a vast improvement. BHS couldn’t keep up that pace as the Lakers would pull away midway through the first half and never looked back. DL improves to 4-2 coming off back-to-back home losses to Thief River Falls and Park Rapids. The Lakers play next at Hawley Monday in tournament action with the host Nuggets, East Grand Forks and Sartell.
