DETROIT LAKES - The Laker girls soccer team rallied for a well-earned stalemate with the Moorhead Spuds Thursday evening at Rotary Fields. Kara Werth gave the Spuds a 1-0 lead scoring the only goal of the first half in the 32nd minute. Moorhead controlled tempo early in the second half and missed on a number of scoring opportunities. Cheyenne Willoughby flew through the box but missed on a kick at shoulder height. Willoughby got a second attempt and earned a corner, and fired a shot parallel to the goal line on a shallow angle, but was stymied by Laker keeper Payton Carlblom. Detroit Lakes responded with Halle Jordan working the middle. She freed up Kyley Foster with a lob and Foster just missed a header opportunity in the 59th minute. Moorhead assumed control and Willoughby hit Andrea Wilmer on a pass. Wilmer’s shot got to Carlblom and got away allowing Karissa Sanchez a tap-in on the rebound for a 2-0 Spud lead in the 62nd minute. The goal fired up the Lakers as Detroit Lakes surrounded the Moorhead net scoring a minute later when Jordan assisted a Foster goal to cut the lead in half. The Laker deficit lasted four minutes until Addie Kay Johnson scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute to tie the score. The game was physical and intense and got more so as extra time approached. DL earned a corner in overtime but failed to score. Moorhead’s best opportunity came on a charge by Katie Olson, but she was fended off by Carlblom in the latter stages of the first five-minute overtime. Wilmer had an opportunity go wide left in the only other threatening scoring chance in overtime. The Spuds are unbeaten in their past six games (4-0-2). The Lakers are 5-1-1 in their last seven games including an 8-2 rout of Crookston Tuesday.
Lakers 8, Pirates 2 Kyley Foster recorded her third hat trick of the season and Halle Jordan also scored thrice and had three assists to lead the Lakers. DL had a comfortable 5-1 lead at halftime. Pirate junior Sabrina Delorme scored both Pirate goals. Crookston (2-5) took a 1-0 lead on Delorme’s first goal assisted by Abby Brekken. Foster and Jordan scored intermittent goals, five in a row, to get the Laker engine revving. Foster scored on a header off an assist by Jordan in the 7th minute. Jordan followed on an assist by Foster in the 10th minute to give the Lakers the lead for good 2-1. The eventual game-winner came in the 14th minute from Foster on a feed by Jade Olson. Jordan scored again in the 26th minute and Foster sealed her first half hat trick in the 39th minute for the 5-1 lead. Anna Payne kept the Laker momentum going two minutes into the second half for DL’s sixth goal. Delorme's second goal came in the 46th minute to make it 6-2. Jordan earned her hat trick in the 58th minute on an assist from Foster. Olson capped the scoring five minutes later. Senior Madison Crane recorded 15 saves in goal for Crookston. Jordyn Peterson had four saves in net for the Lakers. Moorhead at Detroit Lakes, Thursday, Sept. 18 Detroit Lakes 2, Moorhead 2 Records: M 5-3-2; DL FIRST HALF:1, M, Werth 32:00.
