GOLF: Laker boys defend at Jordan, second at North South Classic

Wyatt Blomseth continued a strong senior season capturing medalist honors at the two-day North South Classic by winning a two-hole playoff over Jack Olson of Fargo Davies Saturday, May 19 at Headwaters Golf Club in Park Rapids.

Wyatt Blomseth continued a strong senior season capturing medalist honors at the two-day North South Classic by winning a two-hole playoff over Jack Olson of Fargo Davies Saturday, May 19 at Headwaters Golf Club in Park Rapids.

Blomseth shot rounds of 77 and 72 to tie after 36 holes with Olson at 149. Ryan Paskey also finished in the top five shooting 78-75 153 to take sole possession of fifth place overall.

“We’re getting closer, have five spots set for the section team, still trying to decide the sixth spot between a few guys,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden.

Ben Unruh (78-81 159) Collin Ginnaty (83-79 162) join Paskey and Blomseth as the four seniors with spots solidified for the postseason. Sophomore Hunter Burnside (79-78 157) is the lone underclassmen with a year of playoff experience also set for the push into June.

Lukas Justesen had DL’s sixth position during the tournament. He shot 86-85 171.

Day one of play was held in Bemidji.

Fargo Davies led after the opening day with a team score of 303 and shot 307 in Park Rapids to score 610 and hold the lead.

Detroit Lakes finished in second place shooting matching rounds of 308 to total 316 strokes.

Burnside just missed a top 10 finish placing 11th in a three-way tie. Unruh finished in a three-way jam for 15th place. Ginnaty was 22nd with four other golfers.

The DL JV team placed first with a team score 668 led by medalist Logan Burhans (81-86 167) and runner-up Jack Schramel (84-84 168).

DL defends Jordan title Thursday, May 17 Detroit Lakes defended the Jordan Invitational championship at Ridges at Sand Creek, home of the Class AA state tournament. The Lakers have won this meet all five years they have attended, according to Gorden.

DL shot a 318 combined score to beat Blue Earth (321) by three strokes.

Blomseth and Paskey led the way again finishing a stroke back of New Ulm’s Glavine Schugel (75). Ginnaty tied for 13th with an 82; Burnside tied for 19th with a round of 84; Unruh (85) and Justesen (86) placed 21st and 22nd overall.

The Lakers will split squads for a pair of meets Thursday, May 24 at the Brainerd Invite at The Preserve Golf Course and the Becker Invite at Pebble Creek Golf Club to wrap up the regular season.

The Subsection tournament will be held Wednesday, May 30 at Headwaters in Park Rapids beginning at 9 a.m.
