Familiar faces fill Mid-Am quarters field

Both Pine to Palm Mid-Am finalists from last year advanced to the quarterfinals in a field that had only one upset in eight matches.

The 2017 runner-up Michael Melhus pulled off the one victory from the lower eight qualifiers as the No. 13 seed defeated No. 4 Ben Jurgens 1-up.

Defending champion Perry Piatz was off the course early after an 8&7 victory over No. 16 Frank Campbell.


No. 3 Darren Healey and No. 5 Jason Justesen both picked up victories to return last year’s full semifinal field to this year’s quarters. Healey dispatched No. 14 Todd Wawers 2&1; Justesen took out No. 12 Brian Mahoney 1-up in extra holes.

No. 2 Scott Uithoven defeated No. 15 Jon Studsrud 4&3; No. 6 Kevin Swenson made quick work of No. 11 Chad Ransom 7&6.

No. 7 Aaron Burnside defeated No. 10 Shawn Justesen 3&2. No 8 Matt Johnson was a 1-up victor over No. 9 Paul Uithoven.

The Mid-Am quarterfinals get underway at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10.

Piatz and Johnson start four straight matches off of hole No. 1. Melhus and Jason Justesen tee second and 12:24 p.m., followed by Scott Uithoven and Burnside and Haley and Swenson.
