Blomseth, Spartans qualify for nationals
Detroit Lakes graduate (2018) and Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Fergus Falls freshman Wyatt Blomseth shot a two-day total of 157 to help the Spartans earn a trip to the National Golf Tournament at the Minnesota College Athletic Conference and Region XIII Championships Oct. 1-2 at The Legend Golf Course (Par 72) in Biwabik, Minn.
Blomseth shot the opening day low round (75, +3) in extremely cold conditions.
“Wyatt is such a great player and competitor and was a leader for us especially on the first day with the lowest score in the field,” Spartans’ head coach Jason Retzlaff said. “I'm thrilled that he and our team will get an opportunity to compete in the National Tournament in June. His outstanding short game and experience playing in big tournaments will serve him well at Nationals.
"We are very thankful Wyatt is in our golf program. He is an awesome young man on and off the course which is a tribute to his family and Coach Gorden’s great DL golf program."
As a team, the Spartans shot a two-day total of 613 (308-305) to edge Southwest Tech (Fennimore, Wis.) by two shots (315-300).
With the victory the Spartans qualified for the NJCAA Div. III National Tournament (June 4-7, 2019) at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, NY. This is the Spartans’ eighth consecutive MCAC (Minnesota College Athletic Conference) and Region XIII Championship.
The majority of M-State’s competitive season is held during autumn. The Spartans are scheduled to play more tournaments in the spring prior to the National Tournament.
