Red Wing duo goes low; Lakers fourth at Alex Invite
Detroit Lakes competed against one of the biggest threats to take away the Class AA state title this season in the Red Wing Wingers Wednesday, April 24 at the Alexandria Invitational.
Red Wing’s Leah Herzog shot a 5-under-par 68 and teammate Sophia Yoemans carded a 69 to lead the Wingers to a first place score of 314.
The duo took the top two individual spots at state last season with both golfers taking aim at former Laker Kate Smith’s records. Herzog tied Smith’s two-day low round of 137 only to see Yoemans set a new mark winning the state championship and setting a new record of 129.
The Winger duo posted the only scores in the 60s Wednesday and got enough from the next two scores on the team to defeat runners-up Alexandria (336) by 22 strokes.
Detroit Lakes placed fourth in a tight race for second place. The Lakers scored 338 to finish one stroke behind third place Minnewaska-BBE (337).
The Laker captains both finished in the top five.
Shelby Busker was the long golfer to card a score in the 70s placing third overall with a 77 (+4). Anna Cihak shot an 80 to finish in a three-way tie with Alexandria’s Cora Olson and Wayzata’s Melanie Lemiah.
McKenna Burhans carded a 90, two strokes out of a top 20 finish in a field of 65. McKenna Mallow and Evan Westrum both shot 91 and Madison Gerdes made her varsity debut this season with a score of 100.
DL plays next at the site of the Section 8AA tournament, Town and Country Golf Course in Bemidji Friday, April 26.
