Both Laker golf teams got an early and successful start to the season with victories in rainy conditions at Becker and Minnewaska.

The girls team was led by a four-pack of underclassmen in taking the Bulldog Invitational in Becker by 14 strokes Thursday, April 8.

Freshman Hannah Knoop led the Lakers with a round of 4-over, 76 to place second overall behind only medalist Ellie Breuer of St. Michael-Albertville (73).

Three DL golfers finished in the top 10. Junior McKenna Mallow finished in sole possession of fourth place with 85; seventh-grader Tatum Gatheridge shot 89 to tie for sixth place. Freshman Laura Syltie’s 95 rounded out the Laker team score of the top four golfers. She finished 17th.

All six Lakers were in the top 20 of the field of 61 golfers. Seniors McKenna Burhans (96) and Evan Westrum (97) placed 18th and 20th, respectively.

DL’s team score of 345 was 14 strokes better than second place St. Michael-Albertville (359) and 18 better than third place Becker (363).

Seniors lead boys to Minnewaska win

Senior captains Lukas Justesen and Jake Green finished one-two at Minnewaska and the Laker boys put all six golfers in the top 10 of a 21-stroke victory Friday, April 9 in Glenwood.

Winds were near 20 miles per hour with rain in 41 degree temps.

The Laker boys have 30 golfers out this year with a dozen making the first road trip of the season.

Justesen was the medalist shooting a 6-over 78. Green was two strokes back in second place.

Junior Jack Syltie placed fifth with an 83 and eighth-grader Tommy Suckert carded an 86 for seventh place.

DL scored 327 from its top four golfers, defeating the host Lakers (348) by 21 strokes. Fergus Falls was third with 370, followed by Morris in fourth (383).

Freshmen Noah Meyer (89) and Nick Tobkin (90) tied for eighth and 10th, respectively.

The DL boys head to Becker next Thursday, April 15, before hosting the DL Earlybird at Lakeview Friday, April 16. Tee times range from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the first home meet.

The girls travel to Pequot Lakes Thursday, April 15.
