Fargo Davies and Detroit Lakes each put three golfers in the top 10 with an early two-stroke advantage to the Eagles setting up a battle between the final score from each team’s fourth golfer.

Davies handed the Lakers a loss on home turf by those two strokes Friday, April 16 at the DL Earlybird at Lakeview tournament.

“We played okay on our own course today, but made a few mistakes,” Detroit Lakes head coach Bob Gorden said. “I do like how we are bunching scores, just need to clean up a few things, especially on the greens. What we do need is some warm practice weather.”

Beck Erholtz, a 2021 North Dakota State University commit, captured medalist honors by shooting a round of even par 64, defeating Fargo Davies’ Charlie Solberg by one stroke.

Minnewaska’s Cole Harste shot 66 to grab sole possession of third place.

Jake Green and Jack Syltie of Detroit Lakes led the Lakers with matching rounds of 68 to tie for fourth place with Landon Olson of Fargo North.

Lukas Justesen put three Lakers in the top 10 finishing in a four-way tie for seventh place at 69.

Nick Tobkin and Ben Hines were a stroke back at 70 (+6) in a tie for 11th place. Tommy Suckert carded a 77 to finish in a tie for 31st.

Solberg’s 65 and runner-up finish provided the early two stroke lead for Davies. His teammate Gabe Benson shot a 70 in the fourth spot, as did both of DL’s Hines and Tobkin.

Minnewaska placed third behind Davies and DL, 9 strokes off the Eagles’ pace (282).

Detroit Lakes travels to Pequot Lakes, Wednesday April 21, then will make one of the annual trips to the site of the Class AA state championships, Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan Monday, April 26.

Coach Gorden always has his team competing against each other constantly for the right to make the traveling team.

“Looks like we will have a lot of qualifying for some spots, and Saturday we have 6 guys playing for the last Pequot Lakes spot,” he said.

Temperatures were better than expected at the Earlybird at 50 degrees with a tricky wind whipping through the treetops.
