After cruising through the early portion of the schedule, the Detroit Lakes girls golf team got a preview of the potential challenges of the Section 8AAA tournament placing second to Alexandria on the Cardinals’ home turf, Alexandria Golf Club, Wednesday, April 28.
The Lakers bring a strong resume from decades of dominance in 8AA and missed a first opportunity to compete in 8AAA last season with spring sports canceled.
The Cardinals have been back-to-back 8AAA runners-up (2018-19) and are playing this year without a senior in the lineup. Alexandria lost the 2018 and 2019 section meets by one stroke both times, according to a report by Jared Rubado of the Alexandria Echo Press.
Alex has a big resume of its own. Since 1977, the Cardinals are tied with Red Wing and Edina for most state tournament appearances (20), earning three state titles. Detroit Lakes holds the distinction of 12 state appearances and placing top three in all 12, with 7 championships.
Detroit Lakes junior McKenna Mallow was Wednesday’s medalist shooting 4-over-par 76 to defeat Alex junior Cora Larson by two strokes.
The Cardinals put their four scoring golfers in the top eight; the Lakers had their top four in the top 11.
Freshman Hanna Knoop tied with Minnewaska’s Annika Stensrud and the Cardinals’ Aisling O’Connor for third place with 79s, three strokes off the pace.
The Lakers held Mallow’s two-stroke lead after the top two golfers from each team signed scorecards.
A sixth place 80 from Lauren Rebrovich and an eighth place 83 from Hannah Boraas sealed a 15-stroke team victory for Alexandria (320).
Laker freshman Laura Syltie was 10th with an 89; senior McKenna Burhans shot 91 to tie for 11th place.
Wayzata placed third, 20 strokes behind Detroit Lakes.
DL travels next to Bemidji Town & Country Golf Course, the site of many of the program’s 8AA championships, Friday, April 30. The team’s only scheduled home meet is on the horizon Tuesday, May 11 at the Detroit Country Club.
