Gymnastics: Lakers take 10th at state true team

Whitworth posts team-high all-around score.

The top 10 Class A gymnastics teams met in Melrose on Saturday for the state true team meet.

Detroit Lakes was one of three Section 8A teams, alongside Perham and Melrose, competing for the top spot. The Lakers took 10th place (162.575) behind another solid day from Gabby Whitworth, who totaled an all-around score of 36.35. Her highest mark came on the vault at 9.35.

Jerzie Horner’s all-around score of 34.425 was the second-highest for the Lakers. Her highest score also came on the vault at 9.25. Hope Hamm has been impactful for Detroit Lakes over the last handful of meets and continued to impress on Saturday. She scored in three events, including a mark of 8.65 on the floor.

Elsie Rats also scored in three events. Her all-around score of 26.025 was highlighted with a 9.15-floor routine. Ava Morrison, Jordan Ehnert and Mamie Hunter all recorded top-five scores in various events for the Lakers.

Watertown-Mayer-Mound-Wetonka took first place with an overall score of 180.025. Mankato West (178.55) and Big Lake (178.05)rounded out the podium. Melrose landed in fourth place with a team score of 176.325, while Perham took ninth (166.325).
