No. 1A Laker gymnasts continue to roll

The No. 1A Detroit Lakes gymnastics team posted another big victory in the metro rallying late in the meet to win the Lakeville North Invitational by a comfortable margin Saturday.

“It still wasn’t a complete meet for the girls,” DL head coach Steve Zamzo said. “We left some tenths out there on a bunch of routines.”

DL scored a season-high team score of 150.750 to win by three points over the top-ranked Class AA school Lakeville North (147.750) in second place.

The Lakers scored big on balance beam (38.65) as the only team to surpass 38 points and only one of two teams to score more than 37 in the event.

Peyton Jernberg led the way with a win on beam scoring 9.75 leading four Lakers in the top five. Jackson Hegg scored 9.7 to place second, followed by Justine Lawrence third 9.65 and Cora Okeson fifth with a 9.55.

Jernberg had the top Laker vault placing fourth with a 9.5. Okeson was ninth scoring 9.4.

Justine Lawrence led on uneven parallel bars with a fourth place 9.55. Hegg was eighth with a 9.4.

Three DL gymnasts had top 10 floor routines led by Emma Disse in third place 9.55, Okeson in sixth 9.4 and Hegg in eighth place 9.35.

The same trio all placed top 10 in the all-around led by Hegg in third place 37.75, Okeson in fourth 37.35 and Disse in eighth 36.65.

Cali Berg of Lakeville North captured the all-around title scoring 38.150.

DL’s second varsity team is in action at Park Rapids Thursday, Jan. 18. The next full varsity meet is Friday, Jan. 19 when the Lakers host Perham.
