No.1 Lakers win big at No. 9 Perham

Robert Williams / TribuneCora Okeson and Jackson Hegg captured the top two all-around scores and led the No. 1A Detroit Lakes gymnastics team to a season-high point total of 149.525 in a victory over No. 9A Perham at Hauer Gymnasium in Perham Friday, Jan. 18.
The Yellowjackets were missing two gymnasts in Ashley Hokanson and MacKenzie Rohloff and scored 140.425.
Okeson won the all-around with a score of 37.9. Hegg was four-tenths back with a 37.5 and Perham’s Jada Olsen placed third with a score of 37.3.
Olsen won on two events scoring a 9.35 on bars and a 9.6 on vault to tie for the top spot with the Lakers’ Lexi Yliniemi. Justine Lawrence had DL’s top bar routine with a 9.325.
Okeson had the meet’s highest score winning on floor exercise with a 9.7. Yliniemi was the runner-up scoring 9.55.
The Lakers recorded the top four scores on beam led by Ellie Hultin’s 9.45. Okeson tied with Hultin and Hegg scored a 9.4, followed by Lawrence with an 8.95.
Detroit Lakes has defeated Perham three times in dual format and once in a tournament this season.
The Laker junior varsity also picked up a victory outscoring Perham 126.15 - 52.05.
Detroit Lakes’ second varsity team is in action at Bemidji Thursday, Jan. 24 while the top-ranked first team hosts the State True Team championships Saturday, Jan. 26 at noon. The meet will feature the top 10 teams in Class A and be held at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium.
