Perham was without regular Brittney Lorentz. DL is still awaiting the return of Ellie Hultin, scheduled for January, and has Gabby Whitworth competing on bars only the past two meets due to injury.

Jacket junior Jada Olsen swept all four individual events on her way to a total score of 38.45 and the all-around win.

Jerzie Horner scored all-around bronze with a 33.475, ahead of Perham’s Dena Fischer in fourth place with 34.7.

Eighth-grader Avery McAllister of Perham was impressive taking fifth all-around and third on floor exercise behind Olsen and Hegg.

Olsen had the meet-high score taking vault with a 9.85. Horner was second best with 9.425, Hegg third with a 9.4.

On floor, Olsen scored big again with 9.7 to Hegg’s 9.35.

The Jackets finished the meet strong on beam with Olsen and Breahna Rodewald taking the top two spots. Hegg was third after an uncharacteristic fall.

Perham outscored DL on floor exercise, vault and balance beam but the difference in the meet came on bars.

The Lakers’ top four scores from Hegg, Horner, Whitworth and Jordan Ehnert totaled 34.6 points to 32.5 from Perham’s quartet. While every finish counted with such a slim margin of victory, DL’s full bars lineup placed five in the top seven, including Skylar Nelson in seventh, to create a 2.1-point advantage.

With senior Camryn Brinkman and Melrose in Section 8A this season, gymnastics is going to be highly competitive down the stretch between the top three teams.

Perham (8), Detroit Lakes (5) and Melrose (2) account for 15 of the last 16 Class A state team championships. Only New Prague interrupted the trio with a win in 2013-14.

Detroit Lakes competes again Saturday, Jan. 4 in a split squad day - first team at the Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Officials Association championships in Park Center, second team is at Princeton, along with the Yellowjackets.

The Lakers are the defending champions at Park Center.
