The defending Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Officials Association (MGGOA) champion Lakers placed fifth at this year’s Division 1 invite in Park Center Saturday, Jan. 4.

“I thought we competed pretty well,” head coach Steve Zamzo said. “It was good to have Gabby (Whitworth) back in the lineup. We held off on some of her skills. Some things need to be cleaned up, become more consistent on all our events. We need to continue to work hard in the gym and support one another to become the best gymnasts we can be.”

No. 3AA Mahtomedi won the event with 144 points, less than one-point better than No. 1AA Lakeville North. Mahtomedi is led by last season’s Class A all-around champion Bella Frattalone who won on vault and floor placing second in the all-around to Nadia Abid of No. 11AA Maple Grove. The Crimson placed third in team standings. Mahtomedi moved up to Class AA this season.

Detroit Lakes was the only Class A team in the field scoring 139.875 to take fifth place.

Senior Jackson Hegg had top six finishes on all four events winning on bars, placing third on beam and sixth on vault and floor. Hegg captured bronze in the all-around behind Abid and Frattalone.

Whitworth competed in the all-around for DL for the first time since before Christmas. She recorded seventh place finishes on vault and beam placing 11th in the all-around.

Jerzie Horner was one spot back all-around in 12th place. Her top finishes came on vault (10th) and bars (11th).

Second varsity seventh at Clemenson

DL’s second varsity team placed seventh at the Clemenson Invite in Princeton Saturday.

“This is a challenging experience for this group of athletes,” said Zamzo. “They are competing against high caliber/quality gymnasts. They are not coming out on top but showing grit and determination with their performances and are not backing down.”

The Lakers scored 122.4 points to finish ahead of Princeton. No. 6A Perham won the event with a score of 142.85 behind all-around winner Jada Olsen.

Olsen won on vault, bars and floor to score 38.25 winning the all-around by just under two points.

Taryn Wendt led DL with a 16th place all-around finish. Her top score was on floor exercise (8.5).

“Taryn has put in a ton of work and her performances have shown it,” Zamzo said. “She is working very hard in the gym and is one of our top floor competitors.”

Three other Lakers competed in all-around finishing 18th through 20th.

“I also have been really impressed with Mamie Hunter, Ava Funk and Ava Morrison and their work in the gym,” Zamzo said. “They are gaining experience and skills that will help us very soon.”

The Lakers are back in action Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Moorhead.
