Detroit Lakes senior Jackson Hegg completed her career as the Class A floor exercise state champion and the Class A all-around silver medalist at the state gymnastics individual championships Saturday, Feb. 22 at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.
Hegg held the all-around three after three rotations with a score of 28.975. She was locked in a familiar duel with Perham's Jada Olsen 28.800 heading to the vault.
Olsen stuck her first attempt scoring 9.825 to grab the gold medal on vault and in the all-around with a final score of 38.625.
Hegg’s vaults were both solid but a 9.5 was enough to give the meet title to Olsen.
Annandale’s Becca Green was also in the all-around title mix finishing up on floor exercise after capturing state titles on bars and beam.

Green scored 9.2 on the floor placing 12th and taking all-around bronze with a score of 38.4.
Hegg was the defending bars champion. She placed second, tied with Olsen with matching scores of 9.65 to Green’s 9.85, the top score awarded Saturday.

Hegg and Olsen were nearly even on floor. DL’s senior won gold with a 9.75 to a 9.7 from Olsen and Rockford’s Alayna Schloeder.
For this year’s state all-around champion, competition with Hegg is far more about friendship and competing with each other.
“The entire Section 8A is super great,” Olsen said. “I love this section. Just to go and compete with your best friends is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Jackson is a senior and gets to go out with a title. I didn’t even care that I got third on floor because she deserves it so much. If anyone works harder than me, it’s Jackson Hegg.”
Hegg grabbed another medal, this time bronze, on balance beam scoring 9.575, behind Green’s 9.65 and Mankato West’s Taryn Sellner in second place (9.60).

Leading Section 8A gymnasts Olsen, Hegg and Melrose’s Camryn Brinkman, along with Schloeder and Sellner, earned Class A All-State Elite awards at the state banquet the night before competition as the top five scoring Class A gymnasts.
DL freshman Gabby Whitworth competed in three events reaching the podium on balance beam placing fourth with a score of 9.525, finishing between Hegg and Olsen.
Whitworth also placed ninth on vault (9.5) and 15th on floor (9.2).

Fellow freshman Jerzie Horner scored 9.45 to finish in 13th place.
Olsen became Perham’s fifth state all-around champion joining head coach Jenna (Schmitz) Kupferschmid (2010), Ashley Brasel (2005), Kourtney Johnston (2006) and Kelsi Vomacka (2011). Detroit Lakes’ Molly Lyngaas captured the championship in 2015.
