Henderson, Ullyott earn state wrestling berths
Laker senior duo to represent Detroit Lakes at Class AA tournament.
Seniors Blaine Henderson and Brody Ullyott will represent Detroit Lakes at the Class AA state wrestling tournament after advancing through their respective brackets at the Section 7AA/8AA state preliminary tourney in Foley Saturday, March 20.
Henderson suffered his first loss of the season after advancing to the 170-pound finals with a pair of early pins.
He opened with a second period pin of Thomas Hagen of Hibbing and needed eight seconds less to take down Dom Adams of Mora in a 2:31 semifinal victory.
The final was a Section 8AA dual with Connor Tulenchik of Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus. Tulenchik punched his state ticket with a 6-3 decision forcing Henderson to a true second place match against Princeton’s Zach Marshall.
Henderson had no troubles winning for the 27th time in 28 matches defeating Marshall 7-0.
Ullyott was a state runner-up at 138 pounds last season and will vie for the 145-pound title this year. Ullyott took the same path as Henderson to a second place finish, earning one of two state berths per weight class.
Ullyott dispatched Princeton’s Parker Adkins in the first round winning by fall in the first period, before advancing to the final against Thief River Falls’ Brady Kasprick.
Kasprick won a close 3-1 decision, setting Ullyott up against Grand Rapids’ Dusty Wilke for true second.
Ullyott advanced by scoring the only points in the match 3-0.
Sophomore Cade Jackson was coming off a fourth place state finish in 2020 at 126 pounds, but finished his campaign at 138 this year in third place at prelims.
Thief River Falls’ Griffin Lundeen pinned Jackson in the second period of the true second match to end his run.
Jackson defeated Gavin Benz of Virginia Area by major decision 13-0 in the opening round. Eventual 138 champ Kyle Boeke of Princeton sent Jackson to wrestlebacks with a technical fall victory in the semifinals.
Jackson wrestled twice to advance to the true second match defeating Jacob LeBlanc of Pierz 3-0 and Zac McPhee of Proctor Hermantown 15-2 to claim third place.
Heavyweight senior Andreas Barnett finished third overall, but a semifinal loss to eventual runner-up Justin Matsono of Pine City-Hinckley-Finlayson negated a shot at true second.
Barnett defeated Gage Stankiewicz of Cloquet-Esko-Carlton by technical fall (16-0) to advance to face Matsono, where he lost a tight 7-6 decision.
In wrestlebacks, Barnett made quick work of PLPRB’s Riley Peterson with a 55-second pin before finishing third place in overtime with a 2-1 victory over Brody Ash of Milaca-Faith Christian.
At 160 pounds, Thad Schlauderaff wrapped up his Laker career with a fourth place finish.
After being defeated by runner-up Alex McPhee of Proctor-Hermantown 10-6 in the first round, Schlauderaff defeated Perham’s Blake Lorentz 3-2 to wrestle for third place.
Hibbing’s Bryson Larrabee defeated Schlauderaff 4-3.
DL junior Jacob Ehnert got a late start to the season, but finished his year in fourth place at 220 pounds.
Ehnert was pinned in the first round by first place finishers Hunter Gorecki of Foley. Ehnert won back-to-back matches over Mason Marx of Nashua-Keewatin-Greenway 12-6 and Hibbing’s Ian Larrabee in a third period fall (5:29) to reach the third place match.
Highway 10 rival Wyatt Dunham of United Clay Becker pinned Ehnert in the first period to advance to a true second match. Mora’s Tanner Grangruth defeated Dunham by fall (1:21).
Junior Cole Weber pinned Trevor Thielen of Mora (2:33) in the first round but was defeated by first place finisher Noah Vanderbeek of Princeton 14-3 in the semifinals and Mitchell Christen of Sauk Centre-Melrose (fall 1:46) to finish sixth.
Senior Bradly Swiers opened with a 10-3 victory over Proctor-Hermantown’s Robert Laakso before running into eventual champion Landen Parent of Princeton. Parent pinned Swiers in the first period of the semifinal. Swiers lost his wrestleback against Milaca-Faith Christian’s Jack Schoenborn by fall at the end of the first period for a sixth place finish.
Henderson and Brody Ullyott will compete at the Class AA state tournament Friday, March 26 at St. Michael-Albertville High School. The individual portion begins at 2 p.m.
Henderson (27-1) will face Simley sophomore Travis Smith (22-4) in the opening round. Ullyott (24-3) will take on Lake City junior Jonathan Harvey (24-4).
