State-ranked Prowlers down Laker girls

The Laker girls hockey team trailed by only a goal to No. 6A Thief River Falls after the first period but the Prowlers scored six unanswered goals on home ice to defeat the Lakers 7-1 in Section 8A hockey.

Madyson Melgard scored the lone Laker goal unassisted at 14:03 of the first period to answer the opening goal of the game by Jamie Nelson. The tie score lasted only 23 seconds as Shelby Breiland scored her first of two goals in the game at 14:26 with what would prove to be the game-winner.

Melgard, a sophomore, is second on the team in scoring behind senior Anna Payne.

Nelson tallied the first two goals of the second period to earn a hat trick. Khloe Lund scored unassisted and Breiland added her second midway through the second period for a 6-1 lead.

Kia McGlynn had the only goal of the final period.

Kyndra McDougall made 30 saves in the Laker net. Gabby Steele stopped 18 of DL’s 19 shots to earn the victory.

The Prowlers remain undefeated at 8-0-1 and are 4-0 atop the section standings. DL falls to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in section play.

The Lakers go for the season sweep of Park Rapids in a Mid-State Conference and section game Tuesday night, Dec. 12 at Kent Freeman Arena. The Lakers defeated the Panthers 2-1 in Park Rapids Nov. 28.
