Top-ranked Warroad captures girls 8A hockey title
Warroad is heading back to the Minnesota state Class A girls hockey tournament.
The Warriors held off East Grand Forks Senior High 4-1 on Thursday night in the Section 8A title game.
Warroad, the No. 1 seed in the section, improved to 22-3-2 while Senior High, the No. 3 seed, had its season end at 18-9-1.
The Warriors opened the scoring at 8:29 of the first period on a Julz Teske goal. Warroad scored two more in the second period, getting goals from Geno Hendrickson and Madison Oelkers.
The Green Wave made it 3-1 when Nicole Schlenk scored at 8:13 of the second.
Warroad closed out the scoring on a Katie Kotlowski goal at 16:26 of the third period.
East Grand Forks, however, tested Warroad goalie Quinn Kuntz, who was forced to make 31 saves. McKenzie Whalen finished with 21 saves for the Green Wave.
It was the second straight season the teams met in the section final. Last season, Warroad took a 3-2 win over the Wave when the Warriors scored in the final seconds of the third period to break a 2-2 tie.
