Lakers stretch opening streak to three wins
Detroit Lakes improved to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Mid-State Conference after a 5-2 boys hockey victory Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Kent Freeman Arena.
The Lakers erased an early one-goal deficit on a Kasey Couture power play goal midway through the first period with two even strength goals in the final minute.
Jackson Carlblom assisted on Roland Cormier’s tying goal on a breakaway at 15-minutes, 55-seconds of the first period. Cormier made up for being in the penalty box for tripping on Couture’s goal at 11:08.
Will Green set up Trey Seebold’s go-ahead goal 56-seconds after Cormier’s tally with only nine seconds remaining until intermission. Seebold snuck the puck under Lightning sophomore goalie Adler Hoagland to take the lead.
DL held a 20-5 advantage in shots on goal in the opening frame but took 15 minutes to get the puck past Hoagland.
Nick Lund gave DL a 3-1 lead six minutes into the second period scoring on the power play with assists to Trey Seebold and Braeden Wimmer.
After two periods of play, the Lakers held a 37-10 advantage in shots. Northern Lakes flipped that around with strong play in the third outshooting DL 10-4 as the Lakers were whistled for six penalties in the final 17 minutes.
Couture scored unassisted on the power play three minutes in to add some drama cutting the Laker lead to 3-2, but DL’s third line came up big to ice the victory.
Eli Roe and Hunter Burnside set up Logan Burhans at even strength midway through the period and Burhans assisted on Roe’s tally at 13:09 for the 5-2 final.
The Lightning were 2-7 on the power play; DL converted once in five opportunities. The Lakers committed 10 penalties in the game.
Hoagland stopped 36 of 41 Laker shots on goal.
Laker goalie Blake Itzen improved to 3-0 in net making 18 saves on 20 shots. Itzen has a 1.67 goal against average and save percentage of .938 so far this season.
Seebold leads the Lakers in scoring with six points (2G, 4A). Green is next with four points (2G, 2A). Wimmer, Cormier, Lund, and Carlblom are all averaging one point per game.
DL (3-0) is back at home Friday, Dec. 7 to face Prairie Centre (2-2). The Lakers swept the season series last year outscoring the North Stars 14-6 in two games.
