The Detroit Lakes girls hockey team was named Minnesota state Academic champions at the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association postseason banquet held during the girls state hockey championships.

“Very proud of these young ladies hoping they learned that not only the things on the ice count, but other things matter maybe a little more,” Laker girls hockey head coach Scott Piepkorn said.

The Section 8A academic champion Lakers held a 3.99 cumulative grade point average, which was the highest GPA in both Class A and AA throughout the state.

Senior forward Lily Burnside and senior defensemen Payton Carlblom, Sydney Brininger earned Academic All-State distinctions. Brininger also received the team’s Character Award and was received honorable mention in the Mid-State Conference.

Payton Carlblom, Burnside, and fellow seniors Karrigan Hallisey and Abigail King were named the Mid-State All-Conference team.

The Lakers finished the season with an overall record of 7-18 and advanced to the Section 8A semifinals.
