Junior forward Jon Richards (Detroit Lakes) had points in both games for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team in Plattsburgh, New York over the holiday break as the BluGolds captured the championship of the Great Northern Shootout.
Eau Claire defeated the host team Plattsburgh University 6-1 in the tournament opener and Middlebury College 4-3 in the title game.
Richards had two goals and two assists in the two games, including the primary assist on Cole Paskus' game-winner in the championship game and a highlight reel goal against Plattsburgh.
Richards was strong in the faceoff circle winning 23 of 34 draws, including 16 or 19 in the championship game.
The former Laker standout earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Richards is averaging more than a point per game with five goals and six assists this season.
Through nine games, the BluGolds are 8-0-1 overall. UW-EC is ranked No. 3 in the latest USCHO.com Division III poll and has won eight straight games since a season-opening 1-1 tie at home against St. John's (Minn.).
The Blugolds play only four games in December against Northland and UW-River Falls at home and a home-and-home series with UW-Stevens Point Dec. 13-14. UW-EC will be in the area for a two-game set at Concordia College in Moorhead January 17-18.
