On paper, Saturday’s game of Detroit Lakes at Warroad was a rematch of the Section 8A boys hockey semifinals from last season.
In reality, the game proved to be the continuing dominance of the Warriors over the Lakers that stretches back to last century.
In fact, the last Detroit Lakes boys hockey victory over Warroad was a 4-3 win in 1980.
Saturday afternoon, Warroad continued the four-decade winning streak with a 6-0 victory, but it took a period to get going against the Lakers.
DL trailed by only a goal after the first period of play, an even strength tally by Blake Norris.
Four minutes into the second period, Warroad got their legs moving and led 4-0 on a pair of goals by Jayson Shaugabay and one by Sky Solig with Shaugabay getting the primary assist.
Luke Erickson scored early in the third period and Shaugababy notched a hat trick with a power play tally midway through the final 17 minutes.
Norris had three helpers to go with the game-winning goal.
Detroit Lakes mustered 13 shots on goal, all stopped by Warriors’ netminder Jack Orchard.
Jack Hines stopped 24 of 30 Warroad shots on goal.
Penalties were scarce with each team recording four minutes on two infractions.
Warroad improved to 2-0 overall and have won 29 of the last 33 games dating back to the start of last season.
Detroit Lakes (1-1) continues on the road playing next at Prairie Centre (Sauk Centre high school) Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7:15 p.m.
