Troy Ivesdal of Fargo marked his first ever marathon victory at the first-ever Dick Beardsley full marathon Saturday in Detroit Lakes. Ivesdal is a veteran of 20 regional marathons including Fargo, Grandma’s in Duluth, the Twin Cities and has also run the Boston Marathon. “I’m just a guy, not a professional runner, that’s for sure,” Ivesdal said. Ivesdal was the lone runner to finish the course in less than three hours with a winning time of 2:54.45, 10 minutes ahead of runner-up Keith Lehman, also of Fargo. “With a marathon, you’re running your own race,” said Ivesdal. “No tactics, not a lot of strategy going on. I was very happy with my race.” Ivesdal is a regular runner in Detroit Lakes competing in the Water Carnival races and has participated in every Beardsley race since its inception running the half marathon 19 consecutive years before bumping up to this year’s first-ever full marathon race. The full marathon gave runners a chance to run around the lake clockwise during the second portion of the race. “That was the first time I’d ever run that clockwise direction for the course,” said Ivesdal. “It’s a different course. At long bridge, there’s a steep section going back toward the lake. It’s steep and short, but you also had that one-mile decline. I’m glad I did it that way on the way home.” Nick Bowers had the top local finishing time placing fifth in 3:13.22. DL’s Jack Kippen cracked the top 20 in 20th place with a time of 3:36.40.
Nicole Kungel made it a Fargo sweep winning the women’s marathon in 3:32.06. Kayla Ulschmid was the top DL runner placing 18th in a time of 4:09.27. Moorhead’s Adam Pangrac won the half marathon in 1:14.39; Samantha Vanwechel of Fergus Falls was the women’s champion (1:25.56). The 10k race was won by Kenny Miller of Wadena (33.18) and Casie Coulter of West Fargo on the women’s side.       Miller also won the 5k in a time of 16:47. Amy Fredrickson of Fargo won the women’s 5k in 20.39. Her time was also goof for third place overall. In the relay race, Team Alex, consisting of Sara Oldenkamp, Rachel Jahner, Lori Hochhalter and Sarah Moore placed first with a combined time of 3:32.17.
