Johnson picks up 1,000th career point in leading Perham over Detroit Lakes

Yellowjackets snap a six-game Laker winning streak in milestone game for senior guard.

Perham senior guard Katie Johnson’s first field goal of the game was her 1,000th career point and capped off a 6-0 Yellowjacket scoring run to take control in the first half of a big 65-43 girls basketball victory over Detroit Lakes at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Thursday, March 11.

Laker senior guard Sarah Tangen drained a pair of early threes to get Detroit Lakes off to a good start leading 10-7 at the 11-minute mark of the first half.

Perham warmed up from the field and clamped down defensively going on a 25-13 run to lead 32-23 at halftime.

Johnson’s milestone layup came at the 3:10 mark amidst the Perham run. She added a late three-ball as the half wound down on her way to a team-high 15 points.

Detroit Lakes was as close as three points trialing 19-16 on a three by Abby Larson.

Willow Thiel came off the bench to score 14 for Perham. Stella Raser and Sydney Anderson had 11 and 10, respectively, as the Jackets shared scoring between seven different scorers. Raser led the team with seven rebounds.

Tangen was in double figures for DL with 10 points, Larson added eight.

Perham outscored Detroit Lakes by 13 points in the second half continuing the dominance shown in the opening 18 minutes.

The victory snapped a six-game Detroit Lakes winning streak and was Perham’s fourth win in the past 10 meetings with the Lakers.

Class AA Perham (11-6) benefited from a victory over a Class AAA opponent with playoff seedings looming March 14.

Detroit Lakes (10-5) had played unbeatable basketball the past fortnight and came into Thursday's game with a full week of practice. The Lakers have one day to prepare for the final section game of the regular season Saturday, March 13 at home versus Sauk Rapids-Rice (5-10).
