Laker boys add another victory at subsection course preview

A pair of Lakers, Aiden Lunde and Lawsen Justesen, made varsity debuts; Lunde made an immediate scoring impact and Justesen fulfilled a goal he set as a fifth grader with head coach Bob Gorden.

Detroit Lakes freshman Nick Tobkin continued a consistent varsity season finishing tied for second place and leading the Laker boys golf team to a seventh team victory at Headwaters Golf Club in Park Rapids Friday, May 7.

“Nick Tobkin was solid today,” DL head coach Bob Gorden said. “The two seniors struggled and didn't play their best, but really worked hard for what they got.”

Tobkin posted an excellent round of 1-under-par 71 to finish a stroke back of NDSU commit Beck Erholtz of Staples-Motley.

Erholtz carded three birdies and one bogey in his round of 70, according to a Brainerd Dispatch report . Erholtz birdied two of his first four holes to get to a quick 2-under-par. His lone bogey came on the par-4, 13th hole, but he bounced back on the par-5, 15th with a birdie.

Laker senior Lukas Justesen shot 77 to place fourth overall coming off a win at Detroit Country Club earlier this week. Senior Jake Green carded an 82 to tie for 14th place.

Each season, Gorden throws new golfers in the lineup during the regular season after earning an opportunity in practice. This week, sophomore Aiden Lunde got his shot and made the most of it finishing a stroke back of Justesen in a tie for fifth place (78).

“Aiden Lunde, nice round for the first time on the first team; he was 4-over after three holes, relaxed and ended 6-over,” said Gorden.

Eighth-grader Tommy Suckert was the fourth Laker scoring in team rankings placing 12th overall with a round of 81.

Seventh-grader Lawsen Justesen made his varsity debut shooting an 85 to tie for 25th place.

“First time, not too bad,” Gorden said.

Lawsen, the younger brother of Lukas Justesen, made a play to Gorden two years ago for a varsity spot when he was in fifth grade.

“He told me at state he was going to play with his brother Lukas on the first team when he was a seventh grader,” said Gorden.

Lunde and Justesen got their chances to play due to a pair of injuries to recent starters Ben Hines (back) and Noah Meyer (quad).

Gorden’s team is beginning the push to the postseason and a final shot at a Section 8AA and Class AA state run that begins with Subsections June 2-3 back at Headwaters. The boys team will join the girls in Section 8AAA beginning next season.

“They all told me what they needed to get better at after this point of the season; now they, we, need to go to work to keep getting better,” said Gorden.

The Lakers’ scoring players totaled 307 to defeat Erholtz and the Cardinals by 13 strokes in a field that consisted of half of the 16 Section 8AA teams.

Detroit Lakes has one home meet remaining on the schedule, a two-day invite at Detroit Country Club May 14-15.
