Laker boys battle Sabres again at Hermes Invite

The Detroit Lakes boys cross country team has gotten their fair share of Sartell-St. Stephen in the past week placing second to the Sabres at the Milaca Mega Meet Saturday and again at the John Hermes Invitational Thursday at Fergus Falls.

Aaron Johnson has cemented himself at the top of the Laker pack leading the way again with a runner-up finishing time of 16:34.2, bested by only  11 seconds, placing behind meet winner Tyler Moore of Little Falls (16:23).

The Flyers finished in third place behind the Sabres and Lakers with 92 points getting a top 10 finish from Hunter Zupko in seventh (16:54.5).

Johnson outran the top three Sabres, who won the meet for Sartell-St. Stephen.

Ryan Fernholz, Alex Nemeth and Patrick Hesse placed fifth, sixth, and eighth respectively, to make up the the majority of the scoring difference between the Sabres and Lakers as DL finished with 86 points to Sartell’s 49.

The top five scoring Sabres all placed in the top 20 as Nick Juntenen finished 12th and Jacob Fernholz 18th.

The next two Lakers finished in between the fourth and fifth Sabres.

Connor Haugrud ran 17:04 for 13th position, followed by Zach Buboltz in 17th running a time of 17:17.3.

Tanner Olson and Austin Gedrose rounded out the scoring quintet for DL. Olson placed 26th in 17:40.6, 10 seconds ahead of Gedrose in 17:50.4.

Tanner Eischens (18:51.2) led Frazee to a ninth place finish as the Hornets scored 254 to best the host Otters in 10th (258) and Breckenridge-Wahpenton (318).

Isaiah Stokes (18:01.8) and Austin Askelson (18:17.8) placed 31st and 34th overall for DL in the field of 78 runners.

The Lakers are back in action Thursday, Oct. 8 in Perham before the Mid-State Conference meet at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Monday, Oct. 12.
