The Detroit Lakes girls soccer team responded from an season-opening 2-1 overtime loss at Little Falls with back-to-back shutouts, including a 12-0 victory Tuesday night at Rotary Fields over Crookston. Senior Halle Jordan and sophomore Anna Payne combined for seven of the 12 tallies, both with hat tricks, Payne scoring four. “Halle is going to be right up there and Anna found the net last year and is getting more aggressive,” Laker head coach Dave Carter said. Jordan got DL on the board early a minute into the game with the eventual game-winner and scored three of the Lakers’ first four goals by the 19-minute mark. Jordan Lundberg scored her first of two at 11:02 for a 2-0 lead and her second goal after a pair by Halle Jordan for a 5-0 advantage. The Lakers led 7-0 at the break after back-to-back goals by Payne.
Nicole Swanson, Emily Larson, Lizzie Johnson and Payne (2) added second half goals. Keeper Payton Carlblom faced only a pair of shots in the shutout. DL was coming off a 2-0 shutout victory at Alexandria (1-1) and have a record of 2-1 opening the season against three consecutive Section 8A opponents. With Monday’s blowout of Crookston (0-3), DL is outscoring their opponents 15-2. Crookston is still searching for their first goal of the season after three shutout losses to open the year. The Laker offense has been effective as the DL defense retools with new players after losing starters with speed from last year’s team. “I’m more worried about my defense than I am about my attackers,” said Carter. Tuesday’s output puts any of those issues to rest, at least until the next contest Thursday when Bemidji (2-1) comes to town. The Jacks won at home over Moorhead (0-2) Tuesday 2-1. “We’ve got a lot of young players,” Carter said. “Our numbers are really strong this year.” The Lakers have gone from 38 players three seasons ago to 52 this year. Carlblom is a freshman but has a year of successful experience in net and Swanson, an eighth-grader, got on the board Tuesday. Midfielder Lauren Tschider, a sophomore, will move up into scoring position and recorded an assist on Larson’s goal. Larson, a freshman, and the rest of her teammates showcased the youth movement for the Lakers this year combined with a big effort from senior Halle Jordan, one of only five on the team including Mady Webber, Lundberg, Jordyn Peterson and Mikayla Avila.
