Detroit Lakes doubled up Fargo North/South in shots, Samantha Benson scored twice and Veronica Badurek posted her fourth shutout of the season in a 3-0 interstate victory Friday night at Kent Freeman Arena. The Spartans came out of both intermissions with more jump but as both the second and third periods wore on the Lakers assumed control. A three to one power play advantage for Detroit Lakes in the second period killed Spartan momentum. "I thought we looked a little tired last night," Laker head coach Gretchen Norby said. "We looked sluggish at times and I thought Fargo took advantage of that. It was good to see the second and third lines get out there and take advantage of the ice time." The Lakers got solid play out of the second and third lines. "The second and third lines jumped in there and played well last night," Norby said. "I thought the third line brought a nice attack and did a nice job of battling for the puck and they saw more ice because of it." Benson got her first score in the third period tallying the Lakers’ second goal at 9:50 assisted by Dani Unruh and Payton Carlblom. The trio got a fortunate bounce off a glass partition in the far corner that skewed the puck toward the front of the net where Benson tucked it in. In the final two minutes, Unruh came screaming off the Laker bench to break up a Spartan three-on-two at center ice. Benson picked up the loose change and flipped the puck past goalie Hannah Sivertson on a breakaway. Unruh’s play was one of a number of key defensive plays for the Lakers. Sophomore defenseman Jamie Bollig was held off the scoresheet, but made a number of full-sheet rushes by herself to threaten the Fargo net. Chandra Johnson broke up a two-one-one with a handy poke check a minute after Bollig raced down right wing all alone on Sivertson midway through the third period. Badurek stopped a point blank shot in the first and ended the period poking away a Spartan breakaway as the horn sounded. The teams traded early interference penalties in the opening minutes of the second period and played to a stalemate with back-and-forth hockey.
DL’s top line of Hailey Sonstegard, Randa Larsen and Hannah Rhodes put on sustained pressure earning a power play when Larsen was hauled down in front of the net. Bollig made two quick rushes up the ice with the puck and the Lakers attacked Sivertson in the offensive end for the remaining four minutes of the second period. Sonstegard had the game-winner early in the first period from Rhodes and Larsen. Sonstegard’s goal was her team-leading 13th. Both teams were 0-3 on the power play. Badurek stopped all 19 Spartan shots and improved her goals against average to 2.06 and save percentage to .913. The Laker senior is currently tied for the third most wins in the state. "Veronica played solid again in net for us stepping in and making some good saves." The Lakers put 38 shots on Sivertson who stopped 35. Benson’s goals were her first two of the season. The Lakers improve to 8-3-1 overall and are unbeaten in eight of the past nine games. That stretch continues Thursday, Dec. 18 when the Lakers host West Fargo.
