Seventh-grader Kennedy Hegg won the all-around title and the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team won for the second consecutive time at Perham taking the Jackie Mann Invitational by a wide margin Saturday afternoon. The Lakers secured the section championship last year in the same gymnasium and have recorded a pair of wins at Prairie Wind Middle School since Perham dominated Section 8A for a decade. The victory also snapped a four-year win streak for the Yellowjackets in their home season-opening meet. “The girls have worked very hard at their skills and it showed what they did over the summer,” DL Head Coach Steve Zamzo said. Hegg had a top score of 9.3 on the balance beam and a runner-up score of 9.05 on uneven parallel bars to win the all-around title with 36.05 points. Lexi Peichel and Jordan Martinson led the Yellowjackets scoring 35.55 and 35.35 to finish second and third, respectively, behind Hegg. Alexis Yliniemi recorded to two top scores of the meet with a 9.55 on vault and the same score on her floor exercise. Emma Disse scored a 9.5 on floor to give DL the top two finishes. Disse’s 8.9 on balance beam was runner-up to Kennedy Hegg’s 9.3. Jackson Hegg finished third on the beam to give the Lakers a three-way sweep of the top spots scoring 8.85. Cora Okeson put four DL scores in the top five on beam with a fifth place score of 8.8. The Lakers recorded the top team score in all four events giving an early indication that Detroit Lakes is the favorite to repeat as section champions. “We have quite a few girls that are varsity capable so if somebody were to go down we have somebody that can step up.” Perham was runner-up as a team, but finished over five points behind the Lakers. DL is also without one of their top gymnasts, Molly Lyngaas, until January due to injury. Other notable scores were: Leah Chavez with a third place vault of 9.2.; Thia Olds placed fourth on bars with a score of 8.95. “It’s early in the season. You never know what’s going to happen. We’ve got to remember that there is some poise to be had here. Being strong and powerful is good, but you need to be able to harness that strength and power.”
The junior varsity team also won with 129.65 team points. Cambridge took second and third place with a split squad scoring 125.5 and 103.8. Perham was fourth with 90.35 points; Princeton fifth scoring 79.45. DL freshman Skylar DeBoer was the all-around champion with a score of 31.9. Lydia Gag place seventh overall.
