As the lone elite team at the Morris Area Chokio Alberta Invitational, the Laker gymnastics team flexed their lineup giving a few varsity gymnasts a rest and getting some new faces into the mix leading to an easy victory by more than 11 points Saturday in Morris. Laker freshman Alexis Ostlie was the all-around champion with a score of 34.325. Ostlie had the top score on beam with a 9.025 and a third place floor routine of 8.85 to lead the way. “It’s a good experience for them,” Laker Head Coach Steve Zamzo said. “It was good competition. It was nice. Very gracious hosts, they seemed to have enjoyed it that the other kids were watching and in awe, almost, at the level of gymnastics.” Each of the other teams had one to two gymnasts that star on the team, with the remainder still finding their niche in a sport that demands perfection and repetitive practice to reach the top level. The Lakers have the convenience of being able to go deep into their lineup and still win meets handily.
The team mark of 136.75 will take away some from the initial state rankings that will come out, but DL will boost those numbers quickly as the season progresses. “We’re kind of shooting for that 150 mark.” Sklyar DeBoer was the only other Laker in all four events scoring 30.8 to place sixth. Her best finish was a runner-up score of 9.1 on vault. MiKayla Haugen of Benson-KMS-Montevideo was the only non-Laker to win an event title taking the vault with a score of 9.125, winning by a fraction of a point over DeBoer. Leah Chavez scored 8.6 for the top marks on uneven parallel bars. Johanna Jernberg had the highest score of the meet winning on floor exercise with a 9.3. The Lakers travel to face a young team in Park Rapids on Friday.
