The 2014 spring season was officially kicked off with the Concordia College Indoor Meet in Moorhead Friday, as a nice contingent of Detroit Lakes track and field athletes jumped into their first competition of the season.
Each of the boys and girls teams finished in second place to Moorhead, with the Laker girls winning seven events.
“The girls that we had expected to be very good this, showed their stuff right away,” said DL girls’ head coach Mike Labine. “All in all, it was a really good meet for us. I saw some very positive things out of a bunch of new athletes, which only adds to the potential of this team.”
Laker Megan Ostlie looked strong in the 1,600-meter event, posting a first-place time of 5:32.58.
“I am excited to see her run that fast this early in the season,” Labine said.

Shay Nielsen won the shot put with a throw of 44-7.
“That is the kind of throw that is going to put Shay in the elite thrower category in the state of Minnesota,” Labine added. “Shay has worked hard in the off-season, and it showed right away.”
Allison Berg won both the high jump and the long jump with marks of 4-10 and 16-9.5, respectively.
“Her long jump was very impressive since it is so early in the year and Coach Pete Paulson had her on a very short approach,” Labine said.
In the 4x200 relay, DL split their top eight sprinters into two even teams and finished first and second.
“Definitely a sign that we will have some quality depth in the sprint events this spring,” the DL coach commented.
Lindsey Heinecke won the 55-meter dash, while DL also took three of the top eight places with Berg in third and Emma Disse in eighth.
Kyley Foster looked good for a first meet in the pole vault, winning the event with a height of 9-0.

“We are very limited in what we can do as far as pole vault practice indoors and she did a nice job winning the competition,” Labine said.
The Laker shot put throwers of Kirby Siewert and Ty Heinecke swept the top two spots with throws of 42-00 and 41-09, respectively.
“Ty was a real pleasant surprise throwing over 40 feet for the first time, and stepping up big for us on his last throw,” said DL head boys’ coach Bill Kvebak.
Sam Champa and Ross Kalberer also had big performances by taking first and second in the long jump with distances of 19-00.5 and 18-10.05.
“After good seasons last year, it is nice to see them start where they left off,” Kvebak said.
Matt Lundstrom was impressive in his opening race of this track season winning the mile with a time of 4:48.77.
The 4x800 relay team also ran well winning by almost 30 seconds, with the foursome including Zach Foltz, Richard Bellefeuille, Isaac Clem and Robert Welty-Johnson.
“It was nice to get out and compete on the track and get a feel for where we are at this point, and where we are is a good place to be,” Kvebak concluded.
