Laker tennis splits with Thief River Falls, Moorhead

Detroit Lakes split two matches in a home tennis triangular with Thief River Falls and Moorhead Friday, May 7.

The Lakers fell in the opener to Thief River Falls 6-1.

Gavin Smith moved from his usual spot at 1-doubles to the second singles match and had a fight on his hands to get the Lakers on the scoreboard.

Smith’s match with Isaiah Villareal was the only of the seven to go the distance. Villareal opened with a 6-3 first set win. Smith answered with the break in the second winning 6-4 and won the race to 10 in the third pro set 10-8.

The Prowlers were in command of five matches, including all three doubles tilts.

DL’s Reed Henderson challenged Reece Janisch at 1-singles. Janisch won 7-5, 7-6.

The Lakers flipped the script against the Spuds taking six of seven matches from Moorhead in the nightcap.

Nate Cihak, Austin Miller, and Cole Deraney picked up straight set victories at two through four singles.

The Lakers doubles teams won all three contests in straight sets.

Smith and Connor Zamzo won by a break in each set at 1-doubles.

Smith was the lone Laker to have two wins on the day and did it in both disciplines.

DL’s second pairing of Gabe Reller and Brodie Cariveau won four and love.

Elijah Blow and Parker Davis were three and three winners at 3-doubles.

The 7-4 Lakers travel to Minnewaska Thursday, May 13 and play again at home Monday, May 17 against Osakis.
