The Detroit Lakes girls tennis team continued a schedule against section contending teams in a 7-0 loss to Perham/New York Mills in Perham Tuesday 7-0.

The Lakers were defeated in straight sets in six of seven matches.

Siri Vagle took her first singles match to a third set tiebreak against Kiera Radniecki after each player captured a set by matching scores of 6-3. Radniecki clinched the win with a 10-6 win in the third set tiebreak.

With the team match decided, a super tie-breaker was played instead of a full third set.

“Siri had the momentum in the match and I think she might have won if they had played out the third set,” Laker head coach Greg Unruh said. “Tie-breakers are like a coin flip in that if one player gets hot or lucky for a few points anything can happen. I don't want to take anything away from Radniecki, she is the defending singles champion in her section. Siri is learning to play against number ones and has steadily improved her play. This was by far her best match of the season.”

At two doubles, DL’s Ari Leitheiser and Megan Lunde lost by one break of serve in each set of a four and four match against Katie Johnson and Maggie Trites.

“The other matches were closer than the scores indicate,” said Unruh. “Lots of deuce points again, but an inability to win the big points or making unforced errors at the wrong time doomed us. I'm trying to get across to the girls that there are no throw away points. Until we cut our unforced errors, we will continue to find it difficult to win games, sets or matches. Our two doubles team of Ari Leitheiser and Megan Lunde played well. They led in both sets, but just couldn't finish. We need to do a better job of closing out sets when in the lead.”

Perham/NYM placed second in Section 8A to Thief River Falls last season.

The Lakers (0-5) host Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. The Wolverines were defeated at home Tuesday by Park Rapids 4-3.
