Detroit  Lakes’ U-12  softball team captured first place in the Western Lakes League Tournament Thursday in Hawley.  The single elimination eight-team tournament advanced the top two teams to state next weekend in Buffalo. In game one, Detroit Lakes beat Moorhead 15-4.  Madi Anderson picked up the win by pitching three innings.  Addisyn Young and Madilyn Kirchner collected two hits apiece for Detroit Lakes, while Sydney Schauman hit a home run for the Detroit Lakes team. In the semifinal game, Moorhead took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an unearned run, but DL tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a Matteya Borah double, scoring Lauryn Manning from second.  Moorhead threatened by  loading the  bases in the third inning with zero outs.  However, pitcher Kirchner pitcher herself out of the jam by striking out the next three batters to keep the score 1-1. In the bottom of the third inning, Young placed a perfect base hit bunt down the third baseline.  The Moorhead third baseman made an errant throw to first base and Young scored all the way from first on heads up running and hustle giving Detroit Lakes a 2-1 lead.  Moorhead tied the game in the fourth inning on two walks and an errant throw.
Relief pitcher Madi Anderson came in and shut down the rest of Moorhead’s batters keeping the score 2-2.  In the final frame, Madi Kirchner reached on an error by the catcher and stole second and third with zero outs.  However, Detroit Lakes’ next two batters struck out, leaving Kirchner at third base with two outs.  Second baseman Rachel Perkins laced an RBI sharp single to right, scoring Kirchner and the walk off win.  In the championship game versus Dent, DL put a five-spot on the board in the home half of the third, on their way to a 6-0 triumph.
